Jacqueline......... Art, for me, is a means of self expression. There are many who believe that the arts speak to the emotional mind. If this is so, then it can also be said that the artist draws from the emotional mind in the creation of her/his art. This has been my experience. As the logic of the emotional mind is largely associative, I find that it is very helpful to call upon intuition, memory and especially imagination to aid in the creative process. I've accepted that it is futile to get too attached to a plan for a painting as it almost always has a plan of its own. This is often described as 'the brush taking the next stroke'. There's no way of knowing where a painting will go. No piece is finished until it 'feels' right. What this artist says, really resonates with me; ' Some artists, writers, musicians express themselves by endlessly recreating the single spark of their insight. To put it more bluntly, they do what they have to do, over and over again; they bring out one or more revised editions of the same work. At the end, their life work seems to have been one single insight, delivered in many installments. It is no use asking such an artist exactly what he subconciously feels he is up to. Even an artist who is concious of his processes may find this question hard to answer.'
